Former Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League outfit Gor Mahia acting coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno has been unveiled to take charge at Tanzania Mainland Premier League side Tanzania Prisons.
Otieno was in charge of the Kenyan record champions last season before he was fired after they ended the campaign without silverware. Gor Mahia lost the league title to Kenya Police FC and suffered a 2-1 defeat against Nairobi United in the final of the domestic FKF Cup.
The 56-year-old was unveiled on Wednesday by Prisons, who finished last season 13th, one place above the relegation zone. They amassed 31 points from eight wins, seven draws and suffered 15 defeats.
Apart from Gor Mahia, Otieno was appointed interim coach of the Kenya national team Harambee Stars until he was relieved by Francis Kimanzi in November 2011. Otieno played for Gor Mahia, and made appearances for the Harambee Stars, including two 1994 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.
After the end of the 2012 Kenyan Premier League, Otieno left Sony Sugar to become a politician. He ran for the post of Councillor of Eastlands, Nairobi during the 2013 general elections, but took a break and was re-appointed at Sony Sugar, succeeding Sammy Omollo, who had replaced him in 2012.
He has also coached Posta Rangers and KCB in the Kenyan league.
