Ex-Kaizer Chiefs star Dove reflects on AFCON honour

Mozambique defender Edmilson Dove has explained what playing at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Morocco means to his career and the entire squad.

As Chiquinho Conde’s team prepare for the opening match against defending champions Ivory Coast on Wednesday, the former Kaizer Chiefs wingback described representing his country on the continental stage as an honour.

“It’s an honour to be among the convened. Each time we are called upon, the mission and ambition is to improve and win,” he told the Mozambique Football Federation media.

“We will try to do better than we did in the last edition and we are confident that we can. May Mozambicans continue to support us and pass on their warmth. It is for all of us.”

Who else will Mozambique meet at AFCON?

Mozambique find themselves in a tough Group F comprising former champions Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Gabon. Conde’s men have never gone beyond the group stages of AFCON.

However, despite losing 4-1 to Angola last week in the only warm up match for the tournament, there is optimism in Mozambique’s squad.

The AFCON squad for the Southern African side comprises experienced campaigners such as Reinildo Mandava of Sunderland FC and veteran Elias Dominguez Pelembe, formerly of Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United in South Africa.
