Ex-Kaizer Chiefs tactician appointed Durban City head coach

Durban City FC have announced the appointment of former Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United mentor Gavin Hunt as their new head coach for the upcoming 2025/2026 PSL season.

The decorated figure in South African football penned a deal with the newly promoted side after departing SuperSport United in March, shortly after reaching his 1000th managerial game milestone.

The 60-year-old has over two decades of top-level experience, boasting multiple league titles and domestic trophies. According to his new club, Hunt’s leadership and results-driven approach align with Durban City’s ambitions as they prepare for their debut in the SA top-flight league.

“Durban City Football Club is delighted to officially announce the appointment of Gavin Hunt as the Club’s new Head Coach ahead of the 2025/2026 Betway Premiership Season,” reads the club statement released on Wednesday.

“Citizens, let’s welcome Gavin Hunt. Our New Head Coach. Bringing a winning legacy to our team, our city. A new chapter begins.”

The club’s chairman, Farook Kadodia, expressed his enthusiasm for the appointment: “We are thrilled to welcome Gavin to Durban City. His record speaks for itself, and we believe he is the right person to lead our team into this exciting new era. His professionalism, football knowledge, and winning mentality are exactly what the Club needs as we strive to compete at the highest level.”

Hunt’s move to Durban City marks his ninth club in a distinguished coaching career that began at Hellenic. He has also managed Black Leopards, Moroka Swallows, SuperSport United, Bidvest Wits, Kaizer Chiefs, and Chippa United. His impressive trophy cabinet includes four PSL titles, one MTN8, one Nedbank Cup, and one Telkom Knockout.

Durban City recently parted ways with Simo Dladla, despite his success in guiding them to promotion as Motsepe Foundation Championship winners.
