South Africa’s leading performance coach and video analyst Tshepo Leuta Mahao has shared scientific insights on why Sundowns keep dominating the Betway Premiership.
The serial champions have established themselves as an invincible and immovable modern day South Africa football machine. Whether they change coaches or players, the Pretoria-based giants have always found a way to win silverware every Betway Premiership season.
Beyond tactics, depth and quality, there is something else Miguel Cardoso’s team has been getting right. Masandawana retained the league title for the eighth consecutive season on the bounce weeks ago.
Now, the AmaZulu coaching panel member traced Masandawana’s success to off-season player conditioning. Mahao was speaking in his personal capacity when Pan-Africa Football asked him the secret of ensuring that players return from off-season break while still fit.
Mahao credited Sundowns fitness and conditioning trainers for managing players fitness loads by finding the right balance. This, the ex-Royal AM performance analyst, noted gives Sundowns an edge over other teams.
“If you see, Sundowns start the season slowly but finish strongly while other teams like Orlando Pirates start strongly and finish weakly due to exhaustion,” he said.
He said to ensure proper fitness, it is important to monitor players from off-season and spread the fitness regime to last for a season.
Mahao is a well-versed performance and video analyst having worked for a number of DStv Premiership teams including Polokwane City and Sekhukhune United. He also served in a similar capacity for AS Vita Club in Congo.
He is a graduate of the North-West University sports science graduate whose expertise includes analysing opponents.
