Chippa United head coach Luc Eymael has set the record straight on the recent absence of captain Stanley Nwabali, clarifying that a “misunderstanding” over an injury was to blame for the confusion.
Nwabali, a Nigerian international, returned to the starting lineup on Wednesday, helping the Chilli Boys secure a 1-1 draw against Sekhukhune United in the Betway Premiership. His return came after a notable absence in the team’s previous match against Polokwane City FC, which had fueled speculation he was on his way out, especially with the transfer window still open.
Initial comments from Eymael that the club needed to sort out an “internal issue” with the 29-year-old only added to the rumours. However, the coach now insists there was no conflict and that the issue was purely an injury-related miscommunication.
“In fact, it’s a question of misunderstanding. It was a question of injury, and I did not understand what happened very well,” Eymael said.
The coach acknowledged that the miscommunication wasn’t just with Nwabali but also with the medical staff. Eymael praised his captain for his dedication, noting that he played against Sekhukhune even while not being “100 per cent.”
“You saw his importance [in the Sekhune game]. He is very secure, calm for the defence, and all these things. But there has been a miscommunication,” Eymael added.
He explained why he was initially vague with the media. “When you asked me, I said it’s private because I didn’t know exactly… I didn’t have the words or communication of everybody, so I could not analyse. That’s why I said that, and I didn’t translate well.”
