Trailing at halftime after Aristide Zossou’s 26th minute opener, Clermont Foot managed to turn the game around against Dunkirk to snatch a valuable 2-1 victory.
After struggling in the first half, Clermont returned with renewed purpose after the break with Famara Diedhiou equalizing for CF63 from the penalty spot.
In the dying moments of the match, with Clermont and Dunkerque seemingly headed for a draw, Vital Nsimba forced an own goal from Bram Lagae, allowing the Auvergne side to secure their second consecutive victory of the season.
With this win, Clermont Foot 63 leapfrogged AS Nancy-Lorraine and Boulogne, climbing to 13th place with 28 points. They are five points clear of Amiens, currently in the relegation playoff spot, who face league leaders Troyes on Monday.
Famara Diedhiou has been unstoppable since the start of the year, now with 8 goals in his last 6 matches (10 in total this season, in addition to two assists).
The 33-year-old who has made 15 appearances this season, has 27 caps with 11 goals for two time African champions Senegal. Diedhiou has a rich European experience having played in France for Sochaux, Ajaccio, Angers and in Turkey with Alanyaspor.
He previously played for Bristol City, Cardiff City and in Spain with Granada where he last played before joining Clermont Foot as a free agent.
