Faouzi Chaouchi open to return to the Algerian national side

Legendary Algerian goalkeeper Faouzi Chaouchi said he is open to a return to if called by the Algeria national side. Chaouchi turned 40 in December 2024 as he continues his career in Algerian Ligue 2 side USM El Harrach.

Chaouchi has been instrumental in El Harrach’s push to promotion from the Centre Est region of Ligue 2 and helped his team to reach the quarterfinals of the Algerian Cup. He saved a penalty against former employers JS Kabylie in the cup and also produced a clean sheet as El Harrach defeated a second Ligue 1 side, MC Oran.

His good form for club has pushed the local media to raise the question on a possible return to Les Fennecs. Chaouchi told Algeria TV that the door for the national side call up is still open. “God willing, I am at the disposal of the national team. If the coach needs me, I am ready.”

Algeria coach Vladmir Petkovic has relied in recent times on Persepolis custodian Alexis Guendouz. The Bosnian also usually summons Caen goalie Anthony Mandrea and Alexandre Oukidja of Metz, both of whom play in France's Ligue 2. It seems highly unlikely for Chaouchi to get a surprise call up before the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier games against Botswana and Mozambique.

Chaouchi last summoned for the national side in 2018 where he was on the bench in a 3-0 loss to Portugal in a friendly game.
