The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has congratulated Power Dynamos and ZESCO United on advancing to the next stage of their respective CAF competitions.
Dynamos booked their spot in the final preliminary round of the CAF Champions League after a hard-fought two-legged encounter against Ivorian giants ASEC Mimosas while ZESCO United overcame Gabonese outfit Canon 105 via a 5-2 aggregate.
FAZ president Keith Mweemba believes the qualification of the two sides to the next round of their CAF competitions is a good step for the Zambian game as it tries to reclaim its place on the continent.
“On behalf of my executive and the entire football community, I wish to congratulate ZESCO United and Power Dynamos on qualifying to the next round of their CAF competitions. We are more excited with these victories because of the struggles our teams have endured on the continent in the last few seasons,” said Mweemba as quoted by FAZ Media.
“This should not just be a one-off achievement but a regular occurrence for Zambia to be back at the level where we commanded four slots.”
Dynamos will meet Uganda’s Vipers FC while ZESCO United will have a date with Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy.
“These victories are not just wins for Power Dynamos and ZESCO United but they are wins for the entire country. We have always maintained that when we do things the right way, good results will follow.”
He further noted Power Dynamos, with the right support and preparation, have the potential to replicate their historic continental success of 1990. Mweemba also called on the management and sponsors of both clubs to invest thorough preparations ahead of the decisive next rounds.
“These achievements signal that Zambian football is on the right path. With continued support and proper structures, our clubs can go even further and bring glory to our country,” he concluded.
