The powerful Guinea-Bissau international forward came off the bench in the second half for his second appearance following his return from knee surgery. Awarded a penalty kick, the league’s top scorer stroked a perfect finish into the top corner to make it 17 goals in 19 league matches for the title contenders.
In a heated second half, it was the visitors who prevailed after an own goal doubled FCM’s advantage in the 81st minute. Senegalese defender Ousmane Diao was sent off shortly after but Brondby could only manage a late consolation penalty deep into second half stoppage time.
Despite a four-month layoff from action due to his injury, Franculino continues to hold a substantial lead on the list of scorers in the Danish top flight with six goals separating him from the nearest contenders. He has 22 goals in all competitions this season and at one point, scored in eight consecutive matches.
Now in the final stretch of the campaign in the league’s championship group reserved for the top six clubs, FCM are five points back of surprise leaders AGF Aarhus with six matches remaining. They will host the leaders next Monday where they will need all three points to close the gap.
With the league’s top scorer close to full fitness again, the former Benfica youth product could be the weapon his club needs to secure a title. FCM finished runner-up by one point last season, falling just short to FC Copenhagen. At this point, the title race looks to be between them and AGF and there still remains two clashes between the two contenders in the final stretch.
