The government of Cameroon has stripped the financial management of national teams from the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT). The new directive effectively gives the financial management of the national teams to the Ministry of Sports.

According to Actu Cameroon, Cameroon Prime Minister Joseph Nguté issued a new circular on December 31st, 2024 handing such financial management to the government body. FECAFOOT previously managed funds allocated by the government for the national sides.

The circular stated that the new move allows the Ministry of Sports to control finances. "Within the framework of the execution of expenses relating to the organization of national sports competitions and Cameroon's participation in international competitions, the expression of needs is made by the Presidents of the Sports Federations. The related funds are made available to the Minister responsible for sports, who ensures their management."

Cameroonian football in recent years saw an up and down movement. Recently the 'A' side failed to qualify for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and there has been growing outcry from fans over the handling of football in Cameroon. Last December, FECAFOOT asked the government to support first and second division clubs financially. Nonetheless, the government is yet to give a response.

In Africa, it is common for governments to fund football federations and national sides. The funds can be allocated directly or indirectly through youth and sport ministers.
