Federation Cup: Yanga’s Hamdi praises Singida despite beating them to trophy

Young Africans head coach Miloud Hamdi praised his opponents for putting up a tough fight, despite his side scoring in each half to claim a 2-0 victory in the CRDB Federation Cup final at New Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar on Sunday.

The victory capped off a remarkable season for Yanga, who secured the NBC Premier League title, the Federation Cup, and the Community Shield to complete a domestic treble.

Kenya international Duke Abuya opened the scoring in the 40th minute for Young Africans to lead at half-time. Clement Mzize then made it 2-0, finishing a cross from Maxi Nzengeli. Singida, under Kenyan coach David Ouma, finished the game with ten men after Ghanaian striker Jonathan Sowah was sent off.

“We played a good game, we had many chances to score, we missed many opportunities. But we played against a very good team, Singida are a good team, and it is not easy to win against Singida,” Hamdi told Pan-Africa Football.

“It was not easy, it was very difficult. They have a good team, good squad, good coach. They play a difficult style of game, and I am happy we managed to win 2-0 against them. Today, we played our fourth match in ten days, and we finished very tired. I dedicate this trophy to everybody who supports Young Africans.”

This is Yanga’s ninth Federation Cup trophy, having previously won in 1967, 1974, 1999, 2001, 2015/16, 2021/22, 2022/23 and 2023/24.
