Ferroviário de Maputo stunned União Desportiva do Songo (UD Songo) 2-1 at Nampula Stadium to win the 2024 ZAP Mozambique Cup on Saturday afternoon.
UD Songo, coached by Englishman Mark Harrison, maintained the starting XI from their 3-1 semifinal win over Costa Do Sol 3-1 with veterans John Banda and Elias Dominguez Pelembe selected. His opposite number Carlos, whose side saw off Ferroviário de Beira 1-0 in the other semifinal, also fielded his strong squad, including Lesli, Hugo and Jeitoso.
It was Ferroviário de Maputo who scored first when a ball from midfield set clear Canhembe who raced clear to fire an angled effort into the net via the underside of the upright in the 26th minute. The lead lasted six minutes as Muzaza equalized for UD Songo on the other end of the pitch.
The two teams went to break while tied at one-all only for the Maputo-based side to turn things around with their winning goal in the first half of extra time through Malino’s strike to hand Ferroviário de Maputo’s seventh cup.
Ahead of the game, the former Chippa United coach Harrison had forewarned his players to keep their feet on the ground in the final. His fear proved true with the Tete-based side spurning some clear-cut chances through Pelembe and Miquissone.
