FIFA president Infantino speaks out on Bafana’s World Cup qualification

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has personally congratulated Bafana Bafana following their successful qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the end of a long qualification drought for the nation.

South Africa secured their place in the tournament—their first qualification through the group stage since 2002—by finishing atop Group C. The achievement was sealed with a convincing 3-0 victory over Rwanda at Mbombela Stadium, combined with Nigeria’s defeat of Benin.

Infantino took to social media to send his message of appreciation, celebrating Bafana Bafana’s return to the global stage after their last appearance in 2010 as hosts.

Infantino Hails South Africa’s Return

“Congratulations, South Africa,” Infantino stated. “You are coming back to the global stage again at the FIFA World Cup for the fourth time after the last appearance on home soil in 2010.”

The president highlighted the expanded format of the upcoming tournament, set to be hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

“You will play in at least three of the 104 matches in North America next year. As part of the greatest celebration of our sport that there has ever been, it will be another example of how football unites the world.”

Infantino concluded with an enthusiastic welcome: “We can’t wait to see you at the tournament. Congratulations, South Africa, see you soon.”

The qualification is a massive boost for coach Hugo Broos and his squad, cementing South Africa’s presence at the expanded 48-team tournament next year.
