Saint George SC hit with FIFA transfer ban

The international football governing body, FIFA, has banned Ethiopian champions Saint George SC from making transfers.

FIFA stated that the record Ethiopian champions failed to honour a decision made by the Disciplinary Committee and are now banned from making international and national transfers.

The decision to ban Saint George was rendered by FIFA after the club failed to pay Ghanaian midfielder Kwame Adom Frimpong. The 29-year-old defensive midfielder signed for the Horsemen for two seasons in 2023/24. Nonetheless, the former Aduana Stars player only spent one season, citing non-payment of salary. Frimpong sued Saint George at FIFA a year ago.

Saint George Handed Transfer Ban

A letter from FIFA to the Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) and the Ethiopian champions, seen by Pan-Africa Football, stated that until the club pays any outstanding amount to Frimpong, it has been banned for three consecutive transfer windows.

“In this regard, we wish to inform the parties that a ban from registering new players internationally and nationally has been implemented by FIFA on the Respondent (Saint George). The registration ban will remain active until the amount due is paid and for a maximum duration of up to three entire and consecutive registration periods.”

Saint George is making headlines for some of the wrong reasons. The Addis Ababa giants are still going through leadership and financial crises. The FIFA transfer ban will make things worse if they can’t settle the outstanding fee soon.
