Former Ghana midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang Badu has urged the home based players to prove themselves in order to merit a call up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
There is a clarion call in sections of Ghana for the inclusion of more home based players in the senior team for the global football showpiece following the impressive performance of Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare.
Medeama midfielder, Prince Owusu was the latest local player to be called up for the final two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Central African Republic and Comoros with Kamaradini of Medeama previously earning an invite.
Agyemang Badu, who is a Management Member of the Black Galaxies [senior team B], believes the local players can only catch the eyes of Black Stars coach, Otto Addo with consistent performance.
“I will wish most of my guys will be there but you know my stance and how I am. If we are talking about the economic side then it’s a valid point, excellent because you know the incentives the clubs will get from FIFA and that will cushion the league,” Badu told Radio Gold.
“But if we come to the field of play, I proved myself when I was at Berekum Arsenal, I proved myself when I was at the national U-20 team, and I proved myself with the CHAN team in the edition in 2009.
“And the nation got confidence in me and picked me to the senior Black Stars. [Benjamin] Asare proved himself when he left Great Olympics to Hearts of Oak, he proved himself when he was in the CHAN team.
“My boys in Ghana should prove themselves and convince the coach and he will call them.”
Ghana qualified for the fifth World Cup to be co-hosted by Canada, USA and Mexico after beating Central African Republic and Comoros in the last two matches to top Group I with 25 points after ten matches.
