Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy expressed his satisfaction with the team’s hard-earned point from Inter Miami in their Group A 0-0 opening fixture of 2025 FIFA Club World Cup at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Saturday.
The North African giants looked the better side in the opening exchanges and should have been ahead before the half-time break but forward Trezeguet missed from the penalty spot after his effort was saved by the impressive Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari.
The game turned in favour of Inter Miami in the second period, and it needed the steadiness of El Shenawy to help the former African champions sustain the pressure spearheaded by Lionel Messi to snatch a draw from the game.
“Inter Miami are a great side. In the first half, we did what we needed to and were the better side, but we dropped off a bit in the second half because we knew they’d come out strongly after the break. The humidity got to us a bit too, but at least we got a draw in the end,” said the 36-year-old goalkeeper as quoted by FIFA.com.
Meanwhile, Palestinian striker Wessam Abou Ali, who hit the back of the net but his effort was ruled out for offside, expressed his disappointment with the result, claiming that Al Ahly deserved to bag maximum points from the contest.
“I’m really disappointed we didn’t take three points from the match. With all due respect to Inter Miami, who have a lot of great players, we could have scored three or four goals in the first half. Unfortunately, we didn’t take our chances to get the win,” he told the same portal.
Both teams play their next Group A matches on June 19. Inter Miami will face FC Porto at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, while Al Ahly will meet Palmeiras at MetLife Stadium outside New York City.
