Al Ahly SC star Wessam Abou Ali has revealed that he should have taken the penalty his teammate, Trezeguet, missed during Saturday’s goalless draw against Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami CF.

The missed penalty cost the Egyptian giants a dream start to the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.

In an interview shared by freelance journalist Ali Howorth on X @ahoworths97, Ali insisted that all things being equal, he was supposed to take the penalty that Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari saved twice at the Hard Rock Stadium.

“I am the number one kicker, but Trezeguet wanted to shoot. He felt like he could shoot. Unfortunately, he missed, but we have a list, and Trezeguet is on the list as well, right after me, but he felt like he wanted to shoot and he missed,” he said as shared on X by South African journalist Lorenz Kohler.

The Palestine-born forward insisted that he has no hard feelings with his teammate, as he, too, has missed penalties before.

“That happens in football. We all miss, and I have missed before as well, so you cannot blame it on the penalty. We missed a lot of chances,” Ali added.

The Danish-Palestine player was also unlucky during the game as his effort was ruled out for offside.

Both teams play their next Group A matches on June 19. Inter Miami face FC Porto at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, while Al Ahly will meet Palmeiras at MetLife Stadium outside New York City.
