Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has admitted that the Stylish Guys were not clinical enough to secure the round of 16 spot at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

Masandawana collected four points from three matches at the competition – winning 1-0 in the opener against Ulsan Hyundai, losing 4-3 to Bundesliga powerhouse Borussia Dortmund before concluding with a goalless draw with Fluminense of Brazil.

The 2024/25 CAF Champions League runners-up finished third in Group F on four points behind Fluminense who earned five with Dortmund winning the group with seven points.

Williams, who conceded four goals in three matches, admits that the team was not efficient enough in front of goal to help them qualify for the round of 16.

“The team’s that we played, they don’t need a lot of chances to hurt you and we saw the half chances that they got, they hit the ball,” Williams told the media.

“We had so many other chances throughout the tournament but efficiency and our conversion rate is probably not the best [but] I’m just proud of the boys for the effort, for the fight, the ability to play our football [and] that’s what we are proud of.

“People taught we were going to come here and be defensive but we came here and played our football so I’m just proud of the boys and a lot lessons to take definitely and we can only be proud of how far we have come and I think we have put South Africa football and Mamelodi Sundowns on the map and people will take keen interest now.”

Sundowns, who won the Premier Soccer League title last season, will turn attention to next season’s continental and domestic competitions after losing last term’s CAF Champions League to Egypt side,Pyramids.
