Wydad Casablanca defender Fahd Moufi has insisted that the Moroccan club can hold their heads high despite their 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in their FIFA Club World Cup opener at Lincoln Financial Field on Wednesday.
An early goal from Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku’s 42nd-minute strike were enough to hand Pep Guardiola’s side victory against the determined North Africans in Group G.
Despite the defeat, Moufi believes Wydad have nothing to be ashamed of, giving their all, and pushing Man City to the limit. He further stated Guardiola’s side deserved the result, but believes Wydad’s disciplined display showed they belong on football’s biggest stage.
“We did a good job against a team as big as Manchester City, despite the defeat,” said Moufi. “I believe we represented Morocco and the Wydad fans well in this match.
“We must build on this effort by looking for a positive result against Juventus in the next match. Everyone ran for each other. When you face players like Foden and Doku, you must stay compact and brave. We did that for long spells and created chances.”
He concluded: “We recover, we learn and we go again. Juventus are another massive name, but City showed us the level. If we match that intensity, we can surprise them.”
The defeat left Wydad third in the section. They face Juventus at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday.
