Football Kenya Federation (FKF) in conjunction with title sponsors SportPesa have increased prize money for upcoming Premier League set to kick off on Friday.
According to a statement, the league prize money will have a total of Ksh20 million, with the champions taking home Ksh15 million, runners-up Ksh3 million, and third place Ksh2 million, a significant upgrade from the previous season where the winner used to pocket Ksh5 million.
“For the first time in years, our league champions will be rewarded with prize money befitting a premier competition – Ksh15 million for the winners, Ksh3 million for the runners-up, and Ksh2 million for the second runners-up,” said FKF President Hussein Mohammed.
In addition, the league’s name was changed from FKF Premier League to SportPesa League, with FKF President Hussein Mohammed further committing Ksh10 million into the kitty, with an equal amount coming from the league’s title sponsor.
The 60% of the total funding, amounting to Ksh1.2 billion, will go directly to the clubs, while the remaining Ksh800 million will support league operations and development programs.
Mohammed added: “This partnership aims to restore the league’s credibility, enhance player welfare, and boost fan confidence. Finally, it would mark SportPesa’s return to football sponsorship after their exit in 2019. The deal is expected to bring stability and growth to Kenyan football.”
The Kenyan league is set to kick off on Friday with Tusker facing KCB at Nyayo Stadium.
