FKF Cup: Gor Mahia face Nairobi United with CAF Confederation Cup ticket at stake

After missing out on the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League title, Gor Mahia have another chance to end the season with silverware when they take on Nairobi United in the final of the domestic FKF Cup at Ulinzi Sports Complex on Sunday.

On top of hoisting the coveted trophy, a CAF Confederation Cup ticket will also be up for grabs. Having already lost the league title to Kenya Police FC, this will be Gor Mahia's second chance to clinch a ticket for continental football next season.

They will come up against a Nairobi United side, who have enjoyed a fairytale run in this year’s competition. The second-tier side have not only secured promotion to the FKF Premier League, but also knocked out four top-tier clubs en route to the cup final.

Their journey began in the Round of 64 with a 3-1 win over minnows Global Connection, before embarking on a giant-killing run. They eliminated Tusker FC in the Round of 32, holding them to a 1-1 draw before winning 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out. In the Round of 16, they edged KCB 6-5 on penalties after a 0-0 draw.

The quarter-finals saw Naibois dominate former Cup winners Kakamega Homeboyz with a commanding 2-0 win. In the semi-finals, they faced a resilient Mara Sugar side, drawing 1-1 in regular time before triumphing 3-1 in yet another penalty shoot-out.

Gor Mahia kicked off their road to the final with a 3-0 win over KSG in the Round of 64, followed by a 5-0 victory against GAS FC in the Round of 32. They then dispatched Bandari 2-0 in the Round of 16 and beat Kariobangi Sharks by the same scoreline in the quarter-finals.

In the semis, Gor Mahia faced a stern test against Murang’a Seal, playing out a 2-2 draw in regulation time before edging the tie 5-3 in the shoot-out.

For K'Ogalo, lifting the Cup would mark their return to the continental stage and serve as a strong finish to an otherwise frustrating campaign.
