Gor Mahia squandered another opportunity to close the gap between them and leaders Kenya Police FC after they settled for a 1-1 draw against rivals AFC Leopards in a Mashemeji derby played at Homabay Stadium on Monday.
K’Ogalo knew that a win would move them second on the table and cut Police’s lead to four points, but they were not able to beat their rivals, who scored in the second half to force a stalemate.
Gor Mahia scored first in the 31st minute when Austin Odhiambo scored from outside the box leaving Ingwe goalkeeper Levis Opiyo rooted to the ground.
However, with K’Ogalo trying to defend their cushion, Ingwe pounced when Brian Wanyama volleyed in with his left foot in the 50th minute.
The draw enabled Gor Mahia to jump above Tusker and sit second with 55 points, but they are six points behind Kenya Police, with only two matches remaining to conclude the season. Gor Mahia have now won 15 matches, drawn 10 and lost seven.
Meanwhile, Police have won 17 matches, drawn 10 and lost five. Gor Mahia will now face Ulinzi Stars after the FIFA international break before winding the season against Police, in what could determine who takes the trophy home.
