AFC Leopards head coach Fred Ambani has warned rivals Gor Mahia to forget getting maximum points when the two sides face off in a Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League Mashemeji derby on Sunday.
While uncertainty is still surrounding the 97th derby after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) denied home team Gor Mahia the opportunity to play at Kasarani Stadium which is under renovation, Ambani is confident he will not lose against the record champions.
“AFC Leopards may not be in the title race, but I’m not ready to lose my record to Gor, let either side give their best on the pitch and win fairly. Gor can still fight for the title by winning other games but not this one,” said Ambani as quoted by Nation Sports.
“In this game there can never be any talk of any team giving out an easy win because that amounts to match-fixing. I know it will be very intense because Gor are fighting for the title, but on the other hand, AFC are not ready to lose and I have told my players not to let me down since I have a record to protect.”
Gor Mahia have dominated the derby in recent years, with Ingwe mostly playing catch-up. As per the records, the last six matches have seen Ingwe manage only one win against K’Ogalo.
The first meeting for the current campaign ended in a 0-0 draw at a sold-out Nyayo Stadium.
Last season, it was K’Ogalo, who went home smiling after sealing a double over their rivals.
In the first-round meeting, Gor Mahia secured a 2-0 win before registering a 1-0 victory in the second-round meeting on their way to winning a record 21st league title.
