Kenya Premier League reigning champions Gor Mahia moved up to second in the table following a hard-fought 1-0 win against Shabana at Gusii Stadium on Sunday.

In a crunch fixture that was well attended but was marred by crowd trouble, K’Ogalo needed a stoppage-time effort, courtesy of midfielder Sylvester Wanyama, to collect the maximum points and leapfrog Tusker into second position.

The win put Gor Mahia on 53 points (W15 D8 L5). The record Kenyan champions are now two points behind league leaders Kenya Police FC, who have amassed 55 points from 29 matches. Tusker dropped to third with 52 points.

Meanwhile, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) have promised to get to the root of the chaos that marred the fixture and left many people injured. In a statement, FKF condemned the violence and further said they were working closely with relevant authorities to establish the circumstances that led to the unrest.

“FKF strongly condemns all forms of violence in our stadiums. Football must remain a sport that brings people together, not one that puts lives at risk. The safety and well-being of fans, players, and officials remain a top priority for the Federation,” read part of the statement from FKF.

“We are working closely with the relevant authorities to establish the circumstances that led to the unrest. Decisive disciplinary measures will be taken upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.

On his part, FKF president Hussein Mohammed reiterated that violence has no place in football and that it is time for more action and less talk. “It’s time for more action and less talk. What happened today at Gusii Stadium is unacceptable. Violence has no place in our game. FKF will act decisively. We owe it to our fans, players, and the future of Kenyan football.”

In other matches played on Sunday, Police remained on course to lift their first-ever league title following a 1-0 win against Kariobangi Sharks, while Murang’a Seal returned to winning, following a hard-fought 1-0 win against relegation-threatened Nairobi City Stars.
