FKF Premier League: Kenya Police dethrone Gor Mahia to be crowned

Kenya Police dethroned Gor Mahia as the new champions of Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League following a 1-0 win against visiting Shabana at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos County on Sunday.

The law enforcers went into the second last fixture of the season knowing that a draw would be enough to give them their first-ever league title and deny Gor Mahia a third straight crown.

With all matches being played at the same time, Police needed a 75th minute header courtesy of Brian Otieno to beat the stubborn Tore Bobe and increase their points 64, six more than second-placed Gor Mahia, who managed to beat Ulinzi Stars 3-2.

Tusker, who were sitting third heading into the last rounds of matches, found themselves fourth after managing a 0-0 draw against Kariobangi Sharks with Kakamega Homeboyz leapfrogging them following a 1-0 away win against Bidco United.

Homeboyz win pushed them to 57 points, one less than Gor Mahia, and they can finish second if they manage to beat Tusker in their final game of the season and Gor Mahia suffer defeat against Police on Sunday, June 22.

Police managed 18 wins, 10 draws and five defeats, and they achieved the feat under a new coach – Etienne Ndayiragije – who took charge of the team when they were struggling at the bottom of the 18-team league table.

The Burundian coach came in to replace the fired duo of Anthony Kimani and Salim Babu, and he masterminded a run of nine straight wins without defeat to take Police to the top of the table. Since then, they have been exchanging the top spot with Tusker but finally they achieved their first title.

K’Ogalo were aiming to win a third consecutive title, having won the last two titles to reach a record 21 league titles in the history of the league. The latest success by Police means they will be guaranteed a parade of honour during their last fixture of the season.

By virtue of winning the league, Police will also represent Kenya in the CAF Champions League for next season.
