FKF president addresses Benni McCarthy’s contract amid Harambee Stars exit rumors

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed has explained the contract they signed with South African legend Benni McCarthy to take over as the head coach of the Kenyan national team Harambee Stars.

With speculations rife that McCarthy has been approached to return and handle Orlando Pirates in South Africa following the abrupt exit of Jose Riveiro, who took charge at Egyptian Premier League champions Al Ahly, the FKF supremo maintained that the former Bafana Bafana striker is still under contract with FKF until 2027.

“Benni McCarthy’s term is up to 2027, immediately after AFCON. He is employed like any other employee and his terms of payment are personal to him. If we get his consent, we can discuss the terms of his pay, it should not be a big issue,” Mohammed said on Citizen TV.

He continued: “I would prefer it came from him so that he clarifies because it is a private matter. It is not the figures that have been thrown around and it would be important that it comes from him so that he feels comfortable with that particular agenda.”

“We have agreed within the contract that we have to give each other notice if we want him to leave and if he wants also to leave, the terms are very clear, we have to give a period of time. It is a short period, maybe two to three months and just say we want to part ways and we have a very clear exit plan.”

Since taking charge of the team, McCarthy oversaw four matches, winning one, drawing two and losing one. His first win came in the recent FIFA international friendly window when Kenya defeated Chad 2-1 in Morocco.
