Former Chelsea striker Gael Kakuta has parted ways with struggling coach Pitso Mosimane’s Iran Pro League team, Esteghlal FC.
The Congolese international has left the Iranian giants barely five months after signing for them on a free transfer. Mosimane’s team has confirmed that the Congolese star has left the team following a meeting with management on Monday evening.
“…after a meeting between Esteghlal club directors with Kakuta, the parties reached an agreement to terminate cooperation. Esteghlal FC thanks Kakota's efforts during half of the season for his presence in the club,” the statement reads.
The former France youth international left the Iranian club after it signed striker Mohammad Reza Azadi on a two-and-a-half-year contract.
Kakuta was once rated highly after graduating from youth football ranks of France to sign for Chelsea and won the 2009 UEFA Champions League.
However, the career of the 33-year-old took a downward spiral with the forward spending time across Europe before seeking solace at Esteghlal where he failed to score let alone provide an assist in 13 games.
