Former Chiefs and Stellenbosch winger seeks help, enters rehab centre

Kgaogelo Sekgota, a gifted winger who once graced the fields for Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch FC, has been admitted to a rehabilitation centre to confront substance abuse.

This move comes as the 28-year-old attempts to regain control of a career marred by off-field struggles.

Sekgota’s journey back to South Africa in 2020 marked the beginning of a challenging period. Despite securing a big move to Kaizer Chiefs in 2021 and even catching the eye of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, his professional trajectory unfortunately trended downwards.

Following an unsuccessful stint with Amakhosi, Sekgota joined Stellenbosch FC, but his tenure was cut short after just six months due to violations of the club’s code of conduct. A lifeline came from Limpopo-based Magesi FC before the 2024/25 season, but he was released after only half a year. He then landed at Motsepe Foundation Championship side Upington City last season, where he currently remains.

According to FARPost, Sekgota is now receiving treatment at the Hope of Achievers Rehabilitation Centre in Segwashi village, east of Polokwane. Notably, this is the same facility where former Mamelodi Sundowns player Lerato Chabangu sought help earlier this year.

It is also said that Sekgota’s struggles stem from substance abuse, particularly marijuana, a habit he is now working to overcome. His family and close friends became increasingly concerned as his football career faltered, directly linking his decline to his escalating substance use.

Upington City owner David Mogashoa has affirmed his unwavering support for Sekgota during this difficult period. Mogashoa also confirmed his player’s admission to the centre and emphasised the importance of backing individuals in need.

“You can’t dismiss a player because he is in rehab, so he still has an option with us,” Mogashoa stated as quoted by FARPost. “The player needs support, so I am going to support him. I am driving to Limpopo to see him. You don’t throw away people when they need help, you support them.”

Mogashoa urged others facing similar challenges to seek help, adding, “We are encouraging him, and we also encourage everyone who has an issue to seek help. A player must never be crucified for seeking help. That’s why I am driving to Limpopo now to go and see him.”
