Ghanaian midfielder Gabriel Ahmed passed away in the early hours of Sunday evening. The defensive midfielder spent much of his career in the Ethiopian Premier League.

Ahmed passed away after a short illness, a close source told Pan- Africa Football. He had been actively seeking a new club since leaving Legetafo Legedadi in June 2024. Another source mentioned that he was in Addis Ababa three weeks ago, but he ultimately passed away in his native Ghana.

Ahmed first came to Ethiopia in 2011 after signing for Dedebit. He won the Ethiopian Premier League in the 2012/13 season.

He continued his career in the East African nation with Hawassa Ketema, Mekele 70 Enderta, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Fasil Kenema, Addis Ababa Ketema, Sebeta Ketema, and Legetafo Legedadi.

Ahmed began his career in Ghana with Inter Allies and had a brief spell in Sweden with J-Södra and Djurgården.

His former club Mekele 70 Enderta and the Ethiopian Professional Footballers Association paid tribute upon his passing and sent a message of condolence.

The left-footed defensive midfielder was one of the key foreign players to have graced Ethiopian football in the last decade.
