Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Lucas Suarez has officially signed with Uruguayan club Liverpool FC.

The Argentine centre-back joins the Uruguayan Primera Division side after his loan spell with Sundowns ended at the close of the 2024/25 season.

Suarez, who was on loan from Club Atlético Lanús in Argentina, made 14 appearances and scored one goal for Sundowns. However, the club opted not to make the move permanent, reportedly due to the player’s poor displays and critical errors in key matches against Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

The 30-year-old was also left out of the Tshwane giants squad that played at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States of America (USA).

Liverpool FC, based in Montevideo, Uruguay, announced the signing on their social media on Wednesday, stating, “Defender Lucas Suarez is a new Liverpool defender.” The club is a rising force in Uruguayan football, having won their first-ever Primera División title in 2023.

Meanwhile, according to reports, Sundowns are close to signing TS Galaxy defender Khulumani Ndamane as a potential replacement for Suarez. The 21-year-old Bafana Bafana player is seen as a long-term solution for the club’s defensive needs, with talks between Sundowns and TS Galaxy said to be in the advanced stages.
