Francis Amin Michael is the new president of the South Sudan Football Association (SSFA) after he beat the incumbent, Augustino Maduot Parek. CECAFA president Maduot had high hopes of winning the SSFA elective general assembly but succumbed to Michael.
Michael returns to the helm of the SSFA after leading the association between 2017 and 2021. It was a landslide win for Michael over Maduot after securing 26 votes from the 38 association members. Many of Maduot’s affiliated executive members lost their seats during the election.
After his victory, Michael asked for support for the betterment of South Sudanese football. “I will walk hand in hand with everyone. I’m a person who believes in teamwork.”
The outgoing president, Maduot, accepted his defeat but vowed to stay in South Sudanese football. “I have been defeated and I concede that. This defeat will not send me away from football; I will remain in this sport.”
South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011. They are yet to qualify for the African Cup of Nations, but their junior side played in the 2023 African U-20 Nations Cup.
