Riyad Mahrez’s penalty kick in the second half spurred Algeria to a 2-0 victory on Tuesday over Saudi Arabia in an international friendly played in Jeddah.
The superstar of Les Verts converted from the spot in the 75th minute after Anis Hadj Moussa was tripped in the penalty area, giving Mahrez a goal at the home of his club Al Ahli.
The visitors confirmed the result late on when Hellas Verona defender Rafik Belghali followed up to finish for his first national team goal ten minutes after Mahrez’s opener. It was Hadj Moussa who created danger for the hosts’ defense with another excellent run, allowing Belghali to fire in after his initial shot was saved.
Tuesday’s result leaves Les Fennecs with two wins from two matches during this international window. A few days earlier, they defeated Zimbabwe 3-1 as they continued preparations for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations where they will be in Group E alongside Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea and Sudan.
