Ghana Premier League: Fritz Schmid cautious of GoldStars’ title ambitions

GoldStars have a brighter chance of replacing Asante Kotoko at the top of the Ghana Premier League if they beat Medeama in a delayed week 14 fixture on Wednesday.

The reigning champions share 28 points with Hearts of Oak in 4th and a win against Medeama who are joint leaders with Kotoko on 30 points will bring them to 31 in 16 matches.

Ahead of the encounter at the Duns Park, head coach of GoldStars Fritz Markus Schmid says the players are in good spirits after rallying from two goals down to beat Dreams FC 3-2 in week 16 last Sunday.

“I can say the players are in good spirits especially after last Sunday’s game where they came around and bounced back from a 2-0 nil defeat in the first half. Of course, everybody knows that it’s a tough game coming up but I think with the support of the fans also we are actually really ready to face the challenge,” Markus Schmid told GoldStars TV.

The Swiss tactician, who signed a two-year deal with the Miners, however remained cautious when asked about the league title ambitions.

“I think it’s too early to talk about turning off the season, we know that, it’s the end of the first round coming and there is a very strong and big contenders of the league so I will say let’s just keep up our spirits and get out on the pitch and put the best efforts in the game.”

Midfielder Francis Twene spent a few minutes out of the club’s busy training schedule to share words on the game against Medeama.

“The players have had a good interaction with the coach and per our position on the league log, we are determined to win the remaining games to push us to the summit of the table,” Francis Twene told GoldStars TV.

“Our preparation is also on course to claiming all three points and we are taking a game at a time, we are done with that Dreams fc and the next game is against Medeama so every member of the team is ready to give his all so we can win.”

GoldStars are away to strugglers Eleven Wonders at the Legon Sports Stadium in their final game of the first half of the season with Medeama at home to Hearts of Oak on Sunday, January 4.
