The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), the Uganda Premier League (UPL) Board, and member clubs have reached a major breakthrough on competition reforms following a high-level meeting held on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at FUFA House in Mengo.
Representatives from 11 clubs attended the discussions, which were hailed as constructive and forward-looking. The clubs welcomed FUFA’s commitment to sourcing more resources to enhance club football but also appealed for an increase in financial support to better facilitate the reforms.
In response, FUFA approved a significant increment in annual funding, raising the package from UGX 2.5 billion to UGX 3.4 billion under the FUFA Club Development Reforms Programme.
The enhanced funding will cover key areas such as:
Player insurance
Prize money for competitions
Recruitment of additional staff at the UPL Secretariat
Media and marketing of the league
Locker room bonuses for every league victory
Direct cash support for clubs
The 11 clubs present at the meeting included: BUL FC, URA FC, Maroons FC, Express FC, UPDF FC, Police FC, Mbarara City FC, Lugazi FC, Entebbe UPPC FC, Calvary FC, and Buhimba United Saints FC.
This agreement marks a major step in strengthening Uganda’s topflight football, with the reforms expected to create a more professional and competitive environment for both players and clubs.
