Why FUFA chose to extend Paul Put’s reign as Uganda Cranes head coach

FUFA on Thursday officially ended weeks of speculation surrounding the future of Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Joseph Put by confirming a new three-year contract for the Belgian tactician.

Put’s previous contract was set to expire this month, but following a review of his performance, FUFA decided to retain him until 2028 — a move they say aligns with their long-term vision for Ugandan football.

According to FUFA First vice president Justus Mugisha, the decision was primarily performance-driven, emphasising the progress registered under Put’s stewardship.

“This is in line with our profound vision of building a number-one football nation both on and off the field,” Mugisha explained. “Our coach has done commendable work in the recent past — from nearly qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to guiding the Uganda Cranes to their first-ever CHAN quarterfinal appearance.”

Mugisha further expressed optimism about Uganda’s football future under the Belgian tactician.

“We are confident that Coach Put will take us to greater heights in African football, and who knows, maybe even the next World Cup,” he added.

Put, who was recently linked with a potential move to African giants Cameroon, expressed his delight at extending his tenure with the 1978 AFCON finalists.

“I am very happy and proud,” he said. “When I signed the first time, the President asked me to build a strong team for 2027. You cannot imagine how many messages I received from players asking me to stay. I’ve always felt respected here — by the federation, the players, and the fans.”

Since his appointment, Paul Put has overseen 23 matches in charge of the Cranes, recording 13 wins, 3 draws, and 7 losses — scoring 30 goals and conceding 24 in the process.

The Belgian tactician now shifts his focus to the upcoming international friendlies against Chad and AFCON 2025 hosts Morocco later this month, as Uganda intensifies preparations for the continental showpiece kicking off next month.
