Uganda: FUFA suspends referees over disputed calls in domestic football

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has taken disciplinary action against a number of match officials following the review of contentious incidents from two domestic fixtures.

In a statement released on Monday, March 9, 2026, the FUFA Referees Standing Committee confirmed that it had examined the match involving SC Villa and Express FC, which ended in a goalless draw on March 7, as well as the earlier contest between Buhimba United Saints FC and Police FC played on February 17.

Following the review, the committee resolved to refer several officials to the FUFA Referees Disciplinary Panel while placing them under suspension pending the outcome of the investigations.

Assistant referee Immaculate Ongiera is among those facing scrutiny after her involvement in the Villa–Express encounter.

The official disallowed a goal for offside during the match, a decision that sparked widespread debate among players, officials, and supporters.

Meanwhile, the entire officiating crew that handled the Buhimba United Saints versus Police fixture has also been cited.

Referee Henry Musisi, assistant referees Samuel Mbabali and Fred Kinyera, fourth official John Semakula, match assessor Hillary Kimbugwe, and general coordinator Christopher Kugonza were all referred to the disciplinary panel.

The federation confirmed that the officials will not receive further match appointments until the disciplinary process is concluded.

The referees’ body emphasized that the action is part of ongoing efforts to uphold the Laws of the Game and safeguard the credibility and integrity of football competitions across the country.

It further noted that strict standards are expected from match officials, warning that any conduct deemed to compromise the fairness of the game will attract firm disciplinary measures.
