South Africa’s veteran coach Gavin Hunt has reacted to the growing sympathy from some Premier Soccer League (PSL) quarters following his dismissal by Durban City FC.
The Betway Premiership side took a hardline stance to fire the award-winning PSL coach on Tuesday. Durban City’s decision sparked debate on social media platforms. His exit came a few days after a 2-0 loss to Orlando Pirates in the top-flight league match on Saturday.
Former South African international Rowan Hendricks joined the chorus of those questioning Durban City FC’s shock decision to sack the former Bidvest Wits handler.
In a reaction via his Facebook page, former South African international Rowan Hendricks lashed at club owners for preferring coaches who have not added value to the PSL while mistreating achievers such as Hunt and Pitso Mosimane.
The Facebook post of Hendricks caught the attention of Hunt, who, too, showed appreciation via the same social media platform.
“Thank you for those kind words really appreciated. We will catch
up soon when I am down in Cape Town. God bless,” Hunt wrote on his Facebook page.
Announcing the sacking of the former SuperSport United mentor via a statement, Durban City said they arrived at the decision following “a review of the footballing strategy conducted by the Board of Directors, which concluded a new approach is required to achieve the club’s objectives.”
Earlier, Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi also punched holes in the decision to let go the former Kaizer Chiefs handler barely after five months on the job. He presided over 14 league matches, recording five wins, four draws, and five losses.
Assistant coach Pitso Dlada is now in temporary charge of the Durban-based club first team on an interim basis, and his reign started with a convincing 3-0 victory over Orbit College FC on Wednesday. Durban City are in seventh place
