Durban City FC and veteran head coach Gavin Hunt have agreed to part ways by mutual consent, bringing his tenure to a close just five months after taking the job.
Hunt, a four-time PSL title winner with SuperSport United, was appointed to lead the Durban-based Betway Premiership side following their promotion at the start of the current campaign, replacing Simo Dladla.
The separation comes shortly after the club’s 2-0 loss to Orlando Pirates on Saturday, a result that appears to have precipitated the end of his short reign. Despite the recent defeat, the team was currently sitting in eighth position on the league table after 15 matches, recording five wins, four draws, and five losses.
Durban City made the official announcement on Monday afternoon, confirming the immediate termination of the relationship. The club is now tasked with finding a new mentor to guide the team through the remainder of its debut season in the top-flight.
“Durban City Football Club can confirm that Head Coach Gavin Hunt has left the Club by mutual consent,” said the club.
“The decision follows a review of the footballing strategy conducted by the Board of Directors, which concluded a new approach is required to achieve the Club’s objectives. Assistant Coach Pitso Dlada will take charge of the first team on an interim basis, starting with Wednesday’s fixture against Orbit College.
“The Club will utilise the upcoming break during the Africa Cup of Nations to conduct its appointment process for a permanent successor.
“This timeline is designed to allow the new Head Coach a clear period to prepare the squad for the second half of the season.”
Durban City chairman Farook Kadodia went on to explain the club’s decision to part ways with Hunt.
“This was a mutual decision, taken with the Club’s best interests at heart. I’d like to thank Gavin personally for his hard work and dedication, and we all wish him well for the future,” he said.
“It is now the right time for change as we look to build a competitive side with the future in mind.
