Gebreweld named Ethiopia women's national team coach

The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) has named Yoseph Gebreweld as the new head coach of the the Ethiopian women's national side. The women's team also nicknamed Lucy were without a coach after former coach Firew Hailegebriel's contract ended.


The EFF executive committee unanimously decided to hand the responsibility for Gebreweld who signed a two-year deal. His main task will be qualifying Lucy for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations. Ethiopia last qualified for the WAFCON in 2012 under Abraham Teklehaymanot.


Gebreweld left his post as coach of league side Arbaminch Ketema's women side to take on his new role. He is well known for his time at Hawassa Ketema as he led the team to new heights under his watch. He has also coached the U-20 women's national side at the 2024 All African Games in Accra, Ghana.


Ethiopia will face Uganda in a WAFCON qualifier next month.
