Gezaghen Wolde steps down as Ethiopian Coffee manager amid fan protests

Ethiopian Coffee’s long-serving general manager, Gezaghen Wolde, has submitted his resignation from the club. A rough start to the 2025/26 CBE Ethiopian Premier League season caused fans to protest against the team’s management.

Wolde spent much of his football administrative career with the Browns. His arrival at the club brought some positive changes, including sponsorship deals with Habesha Beer and Betika, a betting firm. Nonetheless, with only one Ethiopian Cup title, the club failed to satisfy its supporters by delivering results.

Wolde previously left the club to take a managerial position at Addis Ababa Ketema FC but later returned to the Browns. He is best remembered as a key ally of Ethiopian Coffee board chairman Lieutenant Fekade Mamo.

Recent protests against Wolde and head coach Abiy Kassahun intensified after the team lost 1–0 to Ethio-Electric in week 4 of the top flight. The Coffee board is expected to convene in the coming week to name a new general manager.
