GHALCA Top Four: Hearts of Oak pip Heart of Lions in opening fixture

Hearts of Oak produced a brilliant performance, pipping Heart of Lions by 1-0 in the opener of the 2025 Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) top four competition in Ghana.

The second game of the competition came up at the Legon Sports Stadium on Wednesday evening marking a repeat of the Homowo Charity Cup.

It was Kwadwo Obeng Junior who came close to finding Heart of Lions opener from a goalkeeping mistake in the 14th minute but his effort missed the post by inches, keeping Hearts of Oak in the game.

Hearts of Oak shot themselves ahead with a superb free kick from left back, Rashford Mensah in the 38th minute.

Hearts of Oak goalkeeper, Sherif Shuaib gifted Heart of Lions an opportunity to score with a poor kick outside his post but their effort struck the post with Oppong Afrane eventually clearing lines for the Phobians.

The record FA Cup holders held on to win the game with their second game against Gold Stars on Friday August 22.
