Hearts of Oak fought back twice to hold reigning Ghana Premier League champions GoldStars to a 2-2 draw but lost 5-4 in the penalty shootout after full time in their GHALCA Top 4 clash on Friday evening.
Gold Stars shot themselves ahead when Hearts defender, Raphael Amponsah fouled an opponent in the 18th minute with Samuel Atta Kumi stepping up to convert from the spot.
Gold Stars doubled their lead in the 34th minute when Atta Kumi tapped in coolly after Benjamin Asare failed to deal with Sampson Eduku’s shot.
Hearts of Oak pulled one back when Martin Karikari slalomed past Gold Stars defenders before setting up George Paaku to peg the game at 2-1 in the 44th minute moving into the half time.
Hearts of Oak returned for the second half looking good with Mohammed Hussein tapping in Martin Karikari’s low cross in the 48th minute.
The rules of the competition sent the game into a penalty shootout with Vincent Atingah converting the last kick to give Gold Stars a 5-4 win.
Gold Stars will now go on five points with Hearts of Oak on four points. Heart of Lions sit in third on three points with Asante Kotoko on no points.
