Ghana international Abdul Fatawu says the goal he scored for Leicester City in their 3-1 EFL Championship win against Ipswich Town on Saturday remains the best of his career.
The 21-year-old picked up the ball deep, saw the Ipswich keeper off his line, and unleashed a left footed strike from around 65 yards that flew over the stranded goalkeeper and into the net.
Bobby De Cordova-Reid set the Foxes up for victory with an early stunner on Filbert Way, followed by the extraordinary goal from Fatawu. Ghana star Jordan Ayew’s finish, early on in the second period, made it three, before Jens Cajuste gave the Tractor Boys hope of an unlikely late comeback that didn’t materialise.
“I always try this from long range,” Fatawu told BBC Radio Leicester. “It’s good that it went in today and I feel amazing. When I hit it, I didn’t have any doubts.”
From 65.2m out – which makes Fatawu’s finish the longest-range goal scored in the Championship since Opta began compiling records in 2013-14 – the only thing the winger was concerned about was when he could start celebrating.
“I was just waiting for it,” he said. “I have scored a couple [of long-range goals] but this is different. I think this is the best one.”
He concluded: “It’ll give more confidence for my team-mates and I’m just happy about it and hope we can keep going for more wins.”
After the game, Fatawu received praise from his manager Martí Cifuentes, was pleased, not only with Fatawu’s goalscoring touch, but also the defensive work from the Black Star.
“It’s a fantastic goal from a very good player and a very important player for us,” the 43-year-old said as quoted by Leicester City website.
“We’re very happy for him, the fact that Abdul showed his quality, not only with the goal, but how much attacking output he is giving us and how much he is helping the team working defensively as well out of possession.
“It shows that he is completely committed. He knows that he has something with the team as well that he has to work with, and then I’m sure that he is going to get the reward.”
Fatawu has so far made 21 appearances for Leicester, scored four goals, and provided six assists.
