Ghana Premier League: “Some players have become swollen-headed” – Bashir Hayford after Gold Stars defeat

Hearts of Lions’ aim to extend their unbeaten streak to six games was halted on Monday by reigning champions, Gold Stars in week six fixture of the Ghana Premier League at the Duns Park.

The Kpando-based club marched into the encounter with five games without a loss but were hypnotized by Amon Kotey’s 36th minute opener which sent the home fans into raptures.

Substitute Sampson Eduku increased the tally for the Miners in the 54th minute before Heart of Lions pulled one back through the experienced Kwadwo Obeng Junior in the 60th minute.

Samuel Attah Kumi iced the cake for Gold Stars through the spot kick in the dying embers of the game to take Gold Stars points haul to nine from five games with an outstanding fixture against Berekum Chelsea on Thursday October 23 at the Duns Park.

Heart of Lions head coach, Bashir Hayford reacted to their first loss, citing complacency on the part of the players.

Heart of Lions were unbeaten in five league matches

“We have not been beaten in our five matches and today on somebody’s soil they have beaten, that is football so that we will go and it will be a wakeup call because some of the players are becoming swollen-headed,” Bashir Hayford said.

“This is what God tells people that I want to give you a test so that something can happen to you and it is a good test and so we are going to prepare very well for another six matches.

“Look at the chances we squandered, it is football, I won’t talk too much so we will go to the training ground and then we will show them the clip and then we see what can happen.”

Heart of Lions now remain on 11 points in fourth spot on the league table from six matches this campaign. Their next fixture is at home to Holy Stars on Friday, October 24 at the Kpando Stadium.
