Black Queens of Ghana head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren believes his side has the quality to overcome any opponent at the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The Swedish tactician made these assertions after Ghana dismantled Russia 4-0 in their second Pink Ladies Cup fixture in the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday.
This emphatic result follows a dominant 4-0 victory over Hong Kong in their opening game at the Al-Hamriya Sports Club Stadium, providing a massive confidence boost ahead of the continental showpiece in Morocco.
Bjorkegren, who has been credited with transforming the Black Queens since taking charge, spoke to the media following the victory.
“Of course, you always dream of the best. We knew before the game that they [Russia] were the favourites because of the rankings and history, but we trust our girls immensely,” Bjorkegren said.
“We are getting better with every game, every camp, and every training session. I am super happy that we won, but more importantly, the way we won. To beat Russia 4-0 was well-deserved and amazing for us.”
The 2025 WAFCON bronze medalists looked sharp and clinical, and Bjorkegren believes this performance serves as a warning to their African rivals.
“If you look at the FIFA rankings, Russia is ranked higher than the teams in Africa. Winning 4-0 today shows the high potential in this group; it proves we have the quality to go all the way and beat anyone at the AFCON.”
Russia, the inaugural 2024 champions, entered the tie on the back of a 4-1 win over Tanzania but were completely outclassed by the Ghanaians.
The Black Queens will now turn their attention to an all-African clash against Tanzania on Friday in the tournament final. The Pink Ladies Cup serves as a vital preparatory exercise for Ghana as they fine-tune their squad for the 2026 WAFCON in Morocco.
