Ghanaian coach Charles Akonnor started his reign at Kenyan Premier League side Gor Mahia on a losing note after going down 1-0 against Bidco United in a fixture played at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday.
After their rivals AFC Leopards and Tusker had dropped points from their respective matches, the record Kenyan champions were keen to start on a positive note in their bid to wrestle the crown from Kenya Police FC.
However, Gor Mahia struggled to break down a Bidco side, who opted to defend every ball that was thrown at their side. Despite enjoying every ball, Bidco resorted to defending, denying the record champions space to break the deadlock.
Gor Mahia almost took the lead in the 12th minute when Michael Kibwage sprayed a long ball across the field looking for Patrick Ochuoga on the right, but the latter failed to hit the target.
Another great opportunity fell to K’Ogalo in the 32nd minute when Austin Odhiambo’s pinpoint pass fell to the unmarked Ochuoga, but the latter saw his effort blocked out for a fruitless corner.
After all the missed chances by K’Ogalo, Bidco needed one chance to take home maximum points. In the 86th minute, Gor Mahia conceded a penalty after a clumsy foul inside the box. Bidco forward Newton Ochieng stepped up to calmly convert from the spot, silencing the Gor Mahia crowd that had packed Kasarani.
In another fixture, Kisii-based Shabana FC kicked off their hunt for the title with a 4-2 victory against promoted side APS Bomet Gusii Stadium.
A double from Harambee Stars striker Brian Michira set up Tore Bobe to the emphatic win.

Murang’a Seal 0-1 Ulinzi Stars
Kariobangi Sharks 0-0 Bandari FC
