Ghana Premier League: Didi Dramani rues missed chance to close on Medeama

Hearts of Oak’s aim to whittle down leaders, Medeaeam’s points were held back by Berekum Chelsea in week 23 of the Ghana Premier League on Sunday at the Legon Sports Stadium.

The Phobians pulled a fast one on rivals Kotoko [1-0 win] last weekend, a result that helped them close the gap on Medeama to five but the draw against Berekum Chelsea dropped them into third.

Hearts of Oak sit third on league table

Head coach of Hearts of Oak, Mas Ud Didi Dramani was left disappointed after the game.

“I think that we still need to improve on our decision making in very key moments of the game [and] we had every opportunity to score a goal if not more and then we control the outcomes. We can control how we set up but we don’t control the decisions,” Didi Dramani said.

“They still loaded but we still had a lot of space to go through them right from the beginning of the game until the end of the game [and] they moved in transition but I think we still controlled the whole game.”

Hearts of Oak dropped into third with 40 points, two behind second placed GoldStars who came from a goal down to win 2-1 at Heart of Lions on Sunday. Medeama still lead the standings on 45 points despite being held to a goalless draw at Samarex.

Berekum Chelsea started poorly in current season

Berekum Chelsea, who won the Ghana Premier League in the 2010-2011 season have had a torrid time in the current campaign with the draw keeping them in 15th on the table with 27 points same as Dreams fc and All Blacks from 23 matches.

“I am not happy at all because that is not the reason why we came here, we came here to win but quite unfortunately we drew with them so I am not happy due to the position that we are now,” Samuel Boadu said after the game.

“We knew that Hearts of Oak have a very good technical team, the individual players are also good so I told them to be compact at the back so that they cannot penetrate.”

Asante Kotoko who suffered a 1-0 loss to rivals Hearts of Oak at home last weekend, redeemed their image at Young Apostles scoring two unanswered goals.

Hearts of Oak Drop Points Against Berekum Chelsea in Ghana Premier League Title Race

Hearts of Oak saw their hopes of closing the gap on leaders Medeama suffer a setback after being held to a goalless draw by Berekum Chelsea in Week 23 of the Ghana Premier League at the Legon Sports Stadium.

The Phobians came into the fixture high on confidence following their narrow 1-0 victory over fierce rivals Asante Kotoko. That crucial derby win had reduced the gap to Medeama to five points, raising optimism among supporters that Hearts of Oak could intensify their title push. However, the stalemate against Berekum Chelsea has now dropped Hearts of Oak into third place on the league table.

Hearts of Oak Dominant but Wasteful

Despite failing to score, Hearts of Oak controlled large spells of the encounter. They created several promising opportunities but lacked the cutting edge required to break down a resolute Berekum Chelsea side.

Head coach Mas Ud Didi Dramani admitted after the match that his side must improve decision-making in key moments.

“I think that we still need to improve on our decision making in very key moments of the game. We had every opportunity to score a goal if not more and then control the outcomes,” Dramani said.

The Hearts of Oak manager believed his team set up well tactically but struggled in the final third. According to him, the inability to convert chances ultimately cost the Phobians maximum points.

“They still loaded but we still had a lot of space to go through them right from the beginning until the end of the game. They moved in transition but I think we still controlled the whole game.”

Title Race Tightens in Ghana Premier League

The draw means Hearts of Oak now sit third with 40 points, two behind GoldStars who secured a dramatic 2-1 win over Heart of Lions. Medeama continue to lead the standings on 45 points despite being held to a goalless draw by Samartex.

With just a handful of matches remaining, the Ghana Premier League title race remains wide open. For Hearts of Oak, every dropped point could prove costly in their pursuit of the summit.

Their recent form — including the morale-boosting derby win — suggests they remain serious contenders, but consistency will be key in the final stretch of the season.

Berekum Chelsea Fight for Survival

For Berekum Chelsea, the point earned against Hearts of Oak could be significant in their battle to avoid relegation. The former Ghana Premier League champions (2010-2011 season) have endured a difficult campaign.

The draw leaves Berekum Chelsea in 15th place with 27 points, level with Dreams FC and All Blacks after 23 matches. Their head coach Samuel Boadu expressed mixed feelings after the result.

“I am not happy at all because that is not the reason why we came here. We came here to win but quite unfortunately we drew with them,” Boadu said.

He revealed his tactical plan focused on defensive compactness to frustrate Hearts of Oak.

“We knew that Hearts of Oak have a very good technical team, the individual players are also good, so I told them to be compact at the back so that they cannot penetrate.”

The strategy worked, as Berekum Chelsea successfully neutralised the Phobians’ attacking threats.
