Ghana’s senior female national team made yet another fine step in their preparation for the 2025 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with a win over Benin on Wednesday.
The Black Queens who are currently in Morocco fine tuning for next month’s tournament in Morocco defeated their West African opponents by 4-2.
Ghana last Saturday beat Malawi 3-1 in the first of three friendly matches to be played before the start of the 2025 WAFCON which kicks off on July 5.
Nina Norshie opened the scoring with an early strike in the 4th minute for Ghana but seven minutes later, Benin scored to restore parity. Later in the 32nd minute, Benin went ahead to make it 2-1 before the halftime break.
Goals from Alice Kusi, Susan Duah, and Chantelle Hlorkah propelled the Black Queens to secure a 4-2 win against Benin at the end of the contest.
Notwithstanding the fine result, Black Queens manager Kim Lars Bjorkegren insists that there is more work to be done before the tournament kicks off.
“We still have work to do, both on and off the pitch,” he admitted. “Tactically, we need to be more organised, and fitness levels must improve.
“Ghana hasn’t won the title, and the last final was in 2006. So we’re not among the favourites,” he said. “But I believe we can be a strong underdog. If we stick to the game plan and have a good day, we can beat any team.”
After the friendly wins against Malawi and Benin, the Black Queens will now prepare for a final friendly match against Nigeria before the start of this year’s WAFCON next month where Ghana is paired in Group C alongside Tanzania, South Africa and Mali.
