Ghana Premier League: Hohoe United hold Heart of Lions in Volta regional derby

The newly born Volta regional derby between Hohoe United and Heart of Lions ended in a stalemate at the Hohoe Stadium on Friday.

The week 17 fixture raised high expectations with both clubs aiming to end a poor run in their last few matches of the first half of the season.

Heart of Lions had gone four games without a win with the newly promoted Hohoe United suffering three consecutive defeats prior to their meeting.

Hohoe United were better placed to win the day but captain of the side, Usman Safianu wasted a penalty kick to peg the entire proceedings at goalless.

Head coach of Hohoe United, Tijani Bashiru says the team was not lucky on the day.

“We were unlucky but we just have to keep working hard to achieve our target. Pressure is part of us, I don’t think I am under pressure at all, just that I have to focus and do what I am coming here to do. We have to try as much as possible to let Hohoe United stay in the premiership.”

Head coach of Heart of Lions, Bashir Hayford gave his analysis after the game.

Heart of Lions are yet to win in seven games

“I think it was a very tough game because both sides didn’t want to lose, the home team played aggressively and we also matched them boot-to-boot and unfortunately they had a penalty they couldn’t convert, we also had a clear chance we couldn’t convert and so we drew and I think both sides are happy,” Bashir Hayford said after the game.

“Consistency is very good for every team so that you play within yourselves and you get the unity and everything but they are playing but it’s all about converting our chances and that is what I have been working on last week and last two weeks.

Heart of Lions have now recorded seven matches without a win with four losses within the poor feat while Hohoe United have now chalked four games without a victory.

Heart of Lions sit 6th with 24 points from 17 games with Hohoe United on 18 points in 14th spot with the remaining week 17 fixtures to be cleared on Sunday, January 4.
