Ghana secured a fifth FIFA World Cup slot on the last day of the qualifiers after pipping Comoros by 1-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, October 12.
The four time African champions were steps away from chalking the feat following a 5-0 walloping of Central African Republic in the penultimate game at the Stade d’Honneur de Meknes in Morocco.
The slim victory over Comoros gave the Black Stars 25 points from ten matches in Group I and the glorious moment has left winger Joseph Paintsil on cloud nine.
“I am very excited that we have qualified and this is the second time and I was part of the last one that we qualified [Qatar 2022],” Joseph Paintsil told GTV SportsPlus.
“It’s really amazing and we really appreciate Ghanaians a lot and we keep going no matter what, we are the Black Stars.”
Ghana first made an appearance at the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany where they reached round 16 before improving on that performance in the 2010 edition South Africa where Uruguay eliminated the Stars via penalty shootouts in the quarter finals.
Their appearance at the 2014 campaign in Brazil was a bad day at the office, failing to advance from the Group stage before missing out on the 2018 edition in Russia. The 2022 tournament in Qatar saw Ghana exit at the group stage. They will hope to make amends at the next edition to be co-hosted by Canada, USA and Mexico in 2026.
